UT-Dallas is a relatively young university. It was established in 1969, offering only graduate degrees initially. The university's undergraduate program commenced later on, in 1990.
 
The average SAT score of incoming UT Dallas freshmen (1248) is among the highest of any public university in Texas, and second highest in the whole state. In addition, the average SAT score of students in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science is approximately 40 points higher than the university's average.
 
(2008) According to Association for Computing Machinery's ranking, UTD's computer science program is ranked 3rd in state and 29th nationally. Its graduate program in software engineering is ranked 2nd in the state and 24th in the world.
 
US News and World Report ranks UTD as the third best public university in the state behind U.T. Austin and Texas A&M - College Station. Both Kiplinger'sPersonal Finance Magazine and Consumer’s Digest have ranked UTD among the best values for public colleges nationally. With an acceptance rate of 53%, UTD is the most selective public university in Texas.
 
In their first world-level competition in 2007, a UT Dallas team of three computer science students finished 14th in a field of 88, putting UT Dallas with MIT and Cal  Tech as the only U.S. universities to rank in the top 20 at the World Finals of the Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest in Tokyo. MIT came in fourth and Cal Tech 12th.
 
UT Dallas consistently ranks among the top 100 colleges and universities in the U.S. in number of freshmen National Merit Scholars.
 
The quality of the students who attend UTD has remained consistently high. In 2009, 36 percent of UT Dallas freshman ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class; 70 percent ranked in the top 25 percent.
 
UT Dallas pre-health students are admitted on first application to medical school at a rate of 61%, against a national admission rate of 49%.
 
U.S. News and World Report ranks UTD's graduate audiology program 4th in the nation. The UT Dallas master's program in Communication Disorders is ranked 12th nationally among speech-pathology graduate programs.
 
The School of Management's Full-time MBA program is ranked among the top 50 in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report. Financial Times has ranked the School of Management's Executive MBA program No. 1 among public university programs in Texas for three consecutive years.
 
The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science launched the first accredited telecommunications engineering degree in the U.S. and is one of only a handful of institutions offering a degree in software engineering.
 
(2008) The UT Dallas chess team is a perennial chess powerhouse, capturing first place in the National Collegiate Championships in three of the past four school years.
 
UT Dallas pre-law majors have been admitted to each of the top 10 law schools in the nation. 86 percent of UT Dallas seniors applying to law school were accepted to at least one school in 2009, far higher than the national average.
 
Doing Good: In 2009, 45 UT Dallas student organizations and departments logged more than 20,000 volunteer hours at 53 Dallas-Fort Worth community agencies.
 
Over the past decade, research funding at UT Dallas has increased four-fold, from $15.9 million in 2000 to more than $65.8 million in 2009.
 
The UT Dallas faculty includes four members of the National Academies -- Dr. Ray Baughman, Dr. David Daniel, Dr. Brian Berry and Dr. Don Shaw – and Nobel laureate Dr. Russell Hulse. Only 3 other universities in TX can make this claim: Rice, UT-Austin, and Texas A&M - College Station.
 
Room to grow: building projects under way at UT Dallas include a major landscape enhancement, a Math, Science and Engineering Teaching-Learning Center, a renovation and expansion of Founders Hall and a new Student Services Building.
 
The School of Management ranks in the top 20 worldwide for faculty research.
 
Special attention: the average student-to-faculty ratio at UT Dallas is 19-1.
 
UT Dallas documented a record 44 patents in 2009, an increase of 60 percent in just one year.
 
According to The Princeton Review , UT Dallas is one of the 50 best undergraduate institutions in the U.S. and Canada to study game design, by way of its innovative ATEC program.
